There are hundreds of ready-made profile picture prompts online, but almost all of them were tested “from text”: the model draws a random person and the image looks great. On your own photo, the same prompt may give you a stranger. We took two ordinary selfies — a woman and a man — and ran them through 10 prompts in Nano Banana Pro to show what happens with a real face.
1. The formula for an AI profile picture prompt
A good prompt for a profile picture from a photo has five parts:
| Part | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Scene and style | where the person is and the look | “in a park among golden maple leaves” |
| Outfit and details | what they wear and hold | “a chunky cream sweater and a rust-colored scarf” |
| Light | where it comes from and what kind | “warm backlight of the setting sun” |
| Keeping the face | the line + 3–5 features | “keep the face exactly the same: face shape, green-gray eyes, freckles, hoop earring” |
| Framing | a circle-friendly composition | “head and shoulders centered, background to the edges of the square, no round border, no text” |
The fourth line matters most. Google’s documentation for Nano Banana advises describing the scene in detail, and OpenAI’s GPT Image prompting guide recommends listing explicitly what must stay unchanged. For a profile picture, that’s the face and its features.
The last line matters too: in our previous test the phrase “so it fits a circle crop” made the model draw a circle with white corners. Wording it as “background to the edges of the square, no round border” fixed that in all 10 images in this article.
2. Profile picture prompts for women: autumn, expert, nail artist
The source is a selfie in a kitchen, in a white T-shirt. Features to check: freckles across the nose and a small silver hoop earring in the left ear. Every prompt below gets the same ending:
Keep her face exactly the same: face shape, green-grey eyes, freckles
across her nose, shoulder-length light brown hair with a side part,
small silver hoop earring. Head and shoulders centered, background
fills the whole square frame, no circular border, photorealistic,
natural skin texture, no text, no logos
Autumn profile picture. The most popular seasonal request in October.

knit sweater and a rust-colored scarf, soft warm backlight of the
setting sun, leaves gently falling, shallow depth of field
Expert headshot. For a consultant, a speaker, a work messenger profile.

Nail artist profile picture. A detail in the frame shows the profession — here, hands with a manicure. We state the number of fingers explicitly.

she smiles and holds one hand near her cheek showing a neat glossy
nude-pink manicure with five well-formed fingers, soft lilac top, clean
bright beauty studio with a pastel pink wall, soft even light
The same trick works for any profession: a camera in hand for a photographer, an apron and kitchen for a chef, bookshelves behind a teacher. More looks for women are in our collection of prompts for a women’s photoshoot.
3. Prompts for illustrated avatars: 3D, noir, pop art
For stylized looks, drop “photorealistic” from the ending but keep the features — otherwise the character stops looking like you.

eyes, cute freckles, shoulder-length light brown hair with a side part,

Black-and-white noir:

Pop art in the style of 1960s comics:

print style: bold black outlines, halftone dots, flat bright colors,
hot pink and yellow background, no speech bubbles
Business headshots, anime, watercolor and neon on a man’s photo are covered in our AI profile picture generator guide, along with a comparison of three models on one prompt.
4. The one line that keeps your face
To show why the face-keeping line matters, we sent the same anime prompt twice: with the features ending and without it.

photo, soft watercolor backgrounds, gentle cel shading, summer meadow
and fluffy clouds behind her, white t-shirt. Head and shoulders
centered, background fills the whole square frame, no text, no logos
Without the line, the model took the overall impression from the photo — hair color, haircut, T-shirt — but lost the earring and some freckles, and the features became more “average”. In a large image the difference seems small, but it’s exactly these details that make the avatar yours.
5. Prompts for men’s profile pictures
Men more often look for business and “character” avatars. The source is a selfie in a gray hoodie; the distinguishing feature is a mole on the left cheek. The ending is the same, with his own features: “face shape, brown eyes, short dark wavy hair, light stubble, small mole on his left cheek”.
1970s vintage:

6. Profile picture prompts for ChatGPT and other models
The prompts in this article aren’t tied to one model: you can send them to GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana Pro or Seedream. The difference is in character. In our comparison on one anime prompt, GPT Image 2.5 drifted into a semi-realistic portrait and moved the mole to the other cheek, while Nano Banana Pro combined style and features most precisely. In practice:
- for realistic avatars (expert, autumn, adventurer), both models work;
- for illustrated styles in GPT Image 2.5, push the style: “clean anime with outlines and flat fills, not photorealistic”;
- for likeness, list your features in any model — it works everywhere.
7. How to adapt a prompt to yourself: 5 tips
- Swap in your own features. Eye color, haircut, freckles, moles, glasses — 3–5 points that set you apart from “someone similar”.
- Change one part at a time. Want a different background? Change only the scene line. That way you know what improved or ruined the result.
- Mention fingers if hands are in the frame. “Five well-formed fingers” lowers the risk of extra fingers.
- Check it in a small circle. An avatar is seen at 40–50 pixels: a plain background and a large face win. VK, the Russian social network, for example, displays community avatar thumbnails at 200×200 pixels.
- Save prompts that work. Once you’ve found your features ending, it drops into any new style unchanged.
Bottom line
A profile picture prompt for your own photo rests on one line: “keep the face exactly the same” plus 3–5 of your features. Our test showed that without it the model loses details like an earring and freckles, while with it you stay recognizable even as pop art or a 3D character. For women, the most popular scenarios are autumn, an expert headshot and a profession-themed avatar; for men, business, vintage and “character” shots. Start with the five-part formula and change the style one line at a time. In AI2Face every prompt in this article works in Nano Banana Pro and GPT Image 2.5, the cost is shown before each run, and the starter credits are enough to try them on your own photo.
FAQ
What prompt should I use for a profile picture from my own photo?
Describe the style, outfit, background and light, then add “keep the face exactly the same” and 3–5 of your features: face shape, eye color, haircut, freckles, moles. End with “head and shoulders centered in a square frame, background to the edges, no text”.
Do these prompts work in ChatGPT and GPT Image?
Yes, the prompts aren't tied to a model. In our test GPT Image 2.5 leaned harder toward photorealism, so strengthen the style description for illustrated looks. Nano Banana Pro worked best for likeness and style at the same time.
Do I have to write avatar prompts in English?
No. Current models understand prompts in many languages. English is handy if you copy prompts from English-language collections, but the language has little effect on the result.
Why does my avatar look like a different person?
Usually the prompt lacks a line about keeping the face, or the source photo is weak: shadows, glasses, a turned head. List your features and upload 2–4 sharp photos.
Can I make a profile picture from a prompt for free?
Partly. AI2Face gives you starter credits when you sign up — enough to test a few prompts from this article on your own photo. The cost of each generation is shown before you run it.
