Ideogram AI: the text-in-image model — what Ideogram 4.0 and 4.5 can do

Developer: IdeogramReleased: Available in AI2FaceAvailable in AI2Face

In short

Ideogram is a family of image generation models from the Canadian company Ideogram, best known for accurate text in images. Ideogram 4.0 (June 3, 2026) is the company's first open-weight model: 9.3B parameters, 2K output and bounding-box text placement. Ideogram 4.5 (September 30, 2026) makes precise edits to existing images without touching the other pixels. Ideogram is available in the AI2Face generator.

What is Ideogram AI

Ideogram is a set of image generation models and a web app from the company of the same name. It was founded in 2023 by former Google Brain researchers and has offices in Toronto and San Francisco. From launch, Ideogram stood out for rendering legible text in images at a time when most models drew scribbles instead of letters.

Many reviews still describe Ideogram 2.0. Here’s the 2026 lineup:

Version Date Best for
Ideogram 3.0 Mar 26, 2025 Logos and on-brand graphics: style presets, style references, palettes
Ideogram 4.0 Jun 3, 2026 Posters, banners, covers; the first open-weight model
Ideogram 4.0 Transparent 2026 Images with no background: stickers, icons, prints
Ideogram 4.5 Sep 30, 2026 Precise edits to existing images and characters from references

The JSON prompt with bounding boxes, API pricing and a 4.0 vs 4.5 comparison are on the Ideogram 4 page.

What Ideogram can do

Text like a real layout. Ideogram 4.0 renders headlines, packaging copy and signage with the right words, including small type and multiple languages. In a blind ContraLabs test, ten professional designers picked the best typography from four models: Ideogram 4.0 won 47.9% of the time, Nano Banana 2 30%.

Bounding-box layout. In Ideogram 4.0 you can specify where the logo, headline, caption and main subject sit on the canvas. The model doesn’t guess the composition; it follows the brief. For precise control, JSON prompts separate the text, placement and palette.

2K and transparent backgrounds. Ideogram 4.0 generates at 1K or 2K. Ideogram 4.0 Transparent outputs images with no background right away — for stickers, icons and prints — with output options up to 8K.

Precise edits in 4.5. Ideogram 4.5 changes only what the prompt asks for and returns the image at the same size: pixels the edit doesn’t touch are copied, not re-rendered. That’s why repeated edits don’t pile up artifacts. It accepts up to 5 input images and prompts up to 10,000 characters.

Characters and style. For one character across a series, Ideogram recommends 4.5 with references. Style presets, style references, palettes and negative prompts remain exclusive to Ideogram 3.0.

App tools. Canvas with Magic Fill and Extend repaints and expands an image, Background Remover and Object Remover cut out backgrounds and unwanted objects, and Ad Resizer adapts a layout to other formats.

Ideogram 4.0 open weights

Ideogram 4.0 is the company’s first open-weight model. It’s a 9.3B-parameter DiT trained from scratch, with a Qwen3-VL-8B text encoder. The weights are on Hugging Face in fp8 and nf4; nf4 runs on a single 24 GB GPU and is supported in Diffusers.

There’s a licensing catch. The inference code is Apache 2.0, but the weights use the Ideogram 4 Non-Commercial license: free for research and non-commercial work, while commercial deployment requires a separate agreement with Ideogram, priced to the customer’s scale.

What Ideogram is good for

  • Posters, flyers and event bills with several text blocks.
  • Ad banners and covers — bounding-box layout and Ad Resizer.
  • Packaging and labels — packaging copy and signage, which Ideogram highlights specifically.
  • Stickers and prints — 4.0 Transparent with no background.
  • Editing finished layouts — 4.5 changes a line of text or an object without touching the rest.

Ideogram vs. alternatives

Ideogram 4.0 Qwen Image 3.0 Recraft V4.1 GPT Image 2.5
Arena rank, text-to-image (Oct 24, 2026) 20 13 26 (Utility Pro) 1 (Sunburst)
Strength typography, bounding-box layout long prompts, small text SVG vectors overall quality and text
Resolution up to 2K up to 2048×2048 1024 / 2048 px up to 3840 px
Transparent background yes (Transparent) yes (2.1) vector yes
Open weights yes, non-commercial no (2.1: yes) no no

On overall quality, Ideogram 4.0 ranks right behind the open Qwen-Image-2.1 and ahead of Recraft, but clearly trails GPT Image and Nano Banana. People choose it not for photorealism but for predictable typography and layout control.

How to write prompts for Ideogram

  • Start with the layout type: “festival poster,” “podcast cover,” “can label.” The model leaves room for the text.
  • Quote text word for word. Write every line exactly as it should appear.
  • Specify position and typeface: “large bold sans-serif in the top third,” “small caption centered at the bottom.”
  • Lead with what matters. Earlier words carry more weight, and the model may skip details past about 150 words.
  • Describe what you want, not what to avoid. “An empty street” beats “a street without people” — the model may draw exactly the people.
  • Don’t paste other tools’ flags such as --ar 16:9: Ideogram reads them as text and may print them on the image.

How to use Ideogram in AI2Face

Ideogram is available in the AI2Face generator. You can generate a poster or banner in Ideogram, GPT Image and Nano Banana from the same prompt and keep the one with the cleanest text. The cost of each generation is shown before you run it, you can pay by card or crypto, and credits from packs don’t expire. New accounts get welcome credits after signing up.

Limitations

  • Non-Latin scripts are weaker. Check Cyrillic and other scripts letter by letter, and split long phrases into lines.
  • Longer text means more typos. Add paragraphs in an editor and give the model headlines.
  • Not a photorealism leader. Ideogram 4.0 ranks 20th on Arena; GPT Image and Nano Banana are ahead.
  • Open weights aren’t for commercial use. Running 4.0 commercially on your own servers needs an agreement with Ideogram.
  • Styles are 3.0-only. Presets, palettes and negative prompts didn’t carry over to 4.0 and 4.5.

Bottom line

Ideogram is the pick for layouts where text matters most: posters, event bills, banners, covers and packaging. Generate in Ideogram 4.0 with bounding boxes for headlines, edit finished work in 4.5, and use 4.0 Transparent for stickers. For vectors, look at Recraft; for very text-dense images, Qwen Image; for photorealism, GPT Image 2.5. You can compare them all on the same prompt in AI2Face.

FAQ

What is Ideogram AI?

Ideogram is a set of image generation models and a web app from the company of the same name, founded in 2023 by former Google Brain researchers. Since its first version, Ideogram has specialized in text inside images: posters, signs, packaging and covers.

Does Ideogram render text in other languages?

Yes, but less reliably than English. Ideogram 4.0 supports multiple languages, yet non-Latin scripts such as Cyrillic should be checked letter by letter, and long phrases are best split into short lines.

Is Ideogram free?

Partly. Ideogram's site has a free plan with credits refreshed weekly, and those images go to a public gallery. The Ideogram 4.0 weights are free for non-commercial use. AI2Face gives new accounts welcome credits after signing up.

What is Ideogram Character?

It's a way to keep the same character across images. Ideogram now recommends doing this in Ideogram 4.5 with up to 5 reference images, and you can save a character to your library and reuse it.

What's the latest version of Ideogram?

Ideogram 4.5, released September 30, 2026, is a model for editing existing images. For generating from scratch, the current model is Ideogram 4.0, released June 3, 2026, with open weights.
