Free AI image generator: what you really get in 2026

A “free AI image generator” in 2026 almost always means a compromise: a free chat assistant that can draw, a trial limit, or reduced resolution. We collected the services whose free access is described in the developer’s own help pages, checked where they’re available, and compared them with an independent quality ranking. The result isn’t flattering for the fully free options: they’re easy to get, but their quality lags well behind the models that lead the world.

Why the fully free generators lose on quality

The fairest way to compare image models is a blind vote. On Arena (formerly LMArena), people see two images made from the same prompt without knowing the models and pick the better one. As of September 24, 2026, the text-to-image leaderboard lists 80 models and more than 6.4 million votes.

Neither YandexART nor Kandinsky appears among the 80 ranked models. So the free tiers of Alice AI and GigaChat give you models that don’t even make the global top 80. That’s fine for a greeting card or a joke avatar. For a photorealistic portrait, a product image or an ad banner, the gap shows right away: complex scenes, hands, text in the image and facial likeness from a photo are handled best by the models at the top of the ranking.

Alice AI and Shedevrum: Yandex’s free generators

Alice AI draws images right in the chat. Yandex says the assistant “can generate images without limits,” and the results can be used in presentations, ads and product listings. The free version differs from Alice Plus in how long images stay in the chat: 14 days versus 30.

Shedevrum is a separate Yandex app for image generation. Its help pages don’t give the number of free generations, but they do list what the Shedevrum Pro subscription adds: 4K, commercial use, watermark removal and a Studio with five models, including YandexART v.2.5 PRO. So a free Shedevrum image carries a watermark and is for personal use only. Pro costs 100 rubles a month with a Yandex Plus subscription, and it still gets you a model outside the global ranking.

GigaChat and Kandinsky 6.0: free, with strings attached

Sber released Kandinsky 6.0 Image on April 28, 2026, and built it into GigaChat. According to the company, the model is free, doesn’t limit the number of generations, and can both create images from text and edit photos. Since summer 2026, GigaChat lets you upload up to three photos and merge them into one scene.

Access is stricter than with Alice. GigaChat’s help requires a Russian IP address and a Sber ID, with any VPN turned off, so the service won’t open outside Russia. And the key point: Kandinsky, like YandexART, is absent from the Arena ranking.

Gemini and ChatGPT: ranking leaders with country limits

Without a subscription, Gemini generates images with Nano Banana 2 from the Nano Banana family and delivers files in 1K. Nano Banana Pro is reserved for Google AI subscribers. Our guide to Nano Banana for free covers the details.

ChatGPT on the free plan generates images with GPT Image, but OpenAI’s pricing page shows only “Limited” next to that line.

Both models sit near the top of the Arena ranking. The catch is availability: Gemini and ChatGPT both work only in the countries on Google’s and OpenAI’s lists, and OpenAI explicitly warns that accounts accessed from unsupported countries may be blocked.

Free vs. paid quality: one prompt, two tiers

Even the leaders cut resolution on the free tier. We ran one prompt — a café chalkboard menu with Russian text — through Nano Banana 2 in 1K, as in free Gemini, and through Nano Banana Pro in 2K, as a subscriber gets it.

Both models wrote all four lines in Russian without a single mistake — text is something the ranking leaders handle well. The difference is resolution: the 1K image has 4 times fewer pixels, and in print or on a large banner the chalk and brick turn blurry. 1K is enough for a social media post, but not for a product listing or print. A note on invisible marks: Google’s API documentation says every Nano Banana image carries a SynthID watermark. You can’t see it, but Google’s tools can detect it.

No sign-up: is it worth looking for?

The official free services require an account: Gemini needs Google, GigaChat needs a Sber ID. Search results promising “no sign-up, unlimited” lead to third-party wrappers around open models such as FLUX. How long images are stored, who owns them and what happens to uploaded photos is up to the site owner alone. It’s best not to upload photos of your face to such sites.
