## What is Midjourney

Midjourney is an image model from the independent lab of the same name. While most models compete on photorealism and exact text, Midjourney is known for the look: even a short prompt produces an image that resembles a painter's work or a film still.

**V8** is a new generation, rewritten from scratch. The V8.0 alpha appeared on March 17, 2026. V8.1 entered alpha on April 14 and on June 11 became the default instead of V7. In HD mode, V8.1 draws a frame twice as large on each side and four times more detailed than V7: a standard frame takes 4 seconds, HD takes 12.

**V8.2** became the default on July 24, 2026. It is an update to the look, the quality and personalization. The developers say the images got bolder, more complex and fresher, and random failed frames became noticeably rarer.

## What Midjourney can do

- **A look out of the box.** A short prompt with no technical detail already gives an expressive result.
- **Personalization.** You rate images, and the model learns your taste. In V8.2 this works noticeably better, especially for active users.
- **Style references and mood boards.** An image, or a set of images, sets the style of new generations.
- **Edit Model.** In V8.2 one edit model replaced Omni Reference, Character Reference and the Retexture tool. The editor, Pan and Zoom Out run through it.
- **HD mode.** Images at 2048 px. Aspect ratio up to 14:1, and in HD up to 4:1.
- **V1 video.** The Animate button turns an image into a 5-second clip with high or low motion. The clip extends to 21 seconds.

Midjourney forgives a short prompt. Other models do not. When you rewrite a prompt for [Nano Banana](/models/nano-banana) or Seedream, add what Midjourney fills in on its own: the medium (oil paint, risograph, clay render), the palette and the light.

## Limitations

- **Only the website and Discord,** by subscription. Paying directly is difficult from some countries.
- **Text in images** is noticeably weaker than in Nano Banana Pro and GPT Image, especially Cyrillic.
- **The new V8 architecture:** old prompt tricks and parameters can behave differently.
- **V1 video** goes up to 720p and only from an image, with no sound.

Midjourney is still the reference for an artistic look: a short prompt, and the image looks like an illustrator's work. V8.2 made it bolder and better at matching an author's style.
