# AI photo enhancer: upscaling vs. prompt editing — tested on one photo

> An AI photo enhancer works in one of two ways: an upscaler increases resolution and fills in detail, while a generative model like Nano Banana Pro edits the photo from a prompt — removing noise, compression artifacts and blur. We tested both on a blurry dog photo: the upscaler produced 4096 × 3072, Nano Banana Pro 2400 × 1792, and both restored the fur and eyes.

“Enhance photo quality” is one of the most common things people ask AI to do. It covers two different tasks. Some people need to enlarge a small image; others want to rescue a blurry, noisy, over-compressed shot. We took a typical photo from an old point-and-shoot and tested both approaches on the same source.

## Two ways to enhance photo quality with AI

| | Upscaler | Generative editing |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | increases resolution and fills in fine detail | redraws the photo from a prompt |
| Control | almost none: upload and get the result | a prompt: what to remove, what to keep |
| Strength | changes the source less | handles heavy blur and artifacts |
| Risk | “plastic” details on badly damaged photos | may change the face or background unless told not to |
| When to use | the photo is fine, just small | the photo is blurry, noisy, over-compressed |

## The test: a blurry 2005 snapshot

The source is a typical compact-camera shot: a golden retriever in a park, 1200 × 896 pixels, heavy JPEG artifacts, noise and soft focus. We generated it with AI to imitate an old photo, so both methods could be compared fairly on the same source.

The first method is an upscaler: it enlarged the image to 4096 × 3072. The second is [Nano Banana Pro](/models/nano-banana-pro) with this prompt:

```
Improve the quality of this photo: remove JPEG artifacts and noise, restore
sharp detail in the dog's fur and the grass, natural colors. Keep the same dog,
pose, framing and background exactly as in the photo, photorealistic, no text
```

![Left: a blurry, noisy photo of a golden retriever in a park; right: the same shot, sharp, with detailed fur and grass](https://ai2face.com/_astro/before-after.xZysABW4_lOL1m.jpg "Left: the 1200 × 896 source; right: after Nano Banana Pro, 2400 × 1792. The composition and pose didn't change")

The difference is visible in the full frame, but the details matter most. Here's the same crop from all three files:

![A close-up of the dog's face in three versions: the blurry source, sharp after the upscaler, sharp after Nano Banana Pro](https://ai2face.com/_astro/crop-compare.CpUktbcS_Z15NGK7.jpg "The same crop: source, upscaler (4096 × 3072) and Nano Banana Pro (2400 × 1792)")

Both methods restored the fur, eyes and nose. The upscaler gave more pixels and kept the source's tones. Nano Banana Pro made the colors cleaner and the contrast stronger — the photo looks like it was taken with a modern camera. If documentary accuracy matters, use the upscaler; if you want a great-looking result, use generative editing.

## How to write a prompt to enhance a photo

A generative model follows the prompt, so the key is to rule out unwanted changes. The formula:

**what to remove + what to restore + what to keep exactly**

- **Remove:** noise, JPEG artifacts, blur, color cast, blown-out highlights.
- **Restore:** facial sharpness, fabric texture, fur, foliage — name whatever matters in the shot.
- **Keep:** “the same face, pose, framing and background exactly as in the photo.” Without this phrase, the model may “improve” a person beyond recognition.

If the photo is old, with creases and stains, that's restoration — covered in our guide [AI photo restoration](/blog/restavraciya-foto-nejroset).

## Which AI to choose

| Task | What to use |
|---|---|
| A small but decent photo for printing | an upscaler to 4K |
| A blurry or noisy phone photo | [Nano Banana Pro](/models/nano-banana-pro) with a prompt |
| A batch of product photos that need a consistent look | [Nano Banana 2](/models/nano-banana-2) from the [Nano Banana](/models/nano-banana) family: cheaper and faster |
| An old damaged photo | Nano Banana Pro with a restoration prompt |
| A portrait that needs a reshoot | editing in Nano Banana, more in our guide [Nano Banana photo editing](/blog/nano-banana-foto) |

## Limitations

- **AI fills in rather than recovers.** It invents details that weren't in the photo. That's not acceptable for documents or forensic work.
- **A badly damaged shot** may come out “plastic” — overly smooth skin, unnatural fur.
- **Text in the photo** — license plates, signs — may be rewritten with errors.
- **Faces** may change unless the prompt forbids it.

## Where to enhance photo quality online

In AI2Face, Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 and other models are all in one generator. Upload a photo, paste the prompt and choose a resolution up to 4K. The cost of each edit is shown before you start, you can pay by card or crypto, and credits from packs don't expire. You get welcome credits after signing up.

## Bottom line

AI enhances photo quality in two ways, and both work: an upscaler carefully enlarges a photo to 4K, while generative editing rescues blurry and over-compressed shots. In our test, both restored the dog's fur and eyes, but Nano Banana Pro produced a more “modern” image, and the upscaler one truer to the source. For a great-looking result, use Nano Banana Pro with a “keep everything as is” prompt; for documentary accuracy, the upscaler; and restore old damaged photos separately.

## FAQ

### Which AI is best for enhancing photo quality?

It depends on the task. If you just need higher resolution and want to keep the photo as is, use an upscaler. If the photo is blurry, noisy or over-compressed, generative editing in Nano Banana Pro with a “don't change the composition” prompt works better.

### Can AI enhance a photo to 4K?

Yes. In our test, the upscaler enlarged a 1200 × 896 photo to 4096 × 3072. Nano Banana 2 and Pro can also output 4K if you set the resolution when editing.

### Can I enhance photo quality with AI for free?

Partly. AI2Face gives you welcome credits after signing up — enough for a few photos. The cost of each edit is shown before you start.

### Will the AI change the face in my photo?

It can, unless you tell it not to. Write in the prompt: “keep the face, pose and background exactly as in the photo.” An upscaler changes the photo less, but it still fills in fine details.
