# Nano Banana free: Gemini limits and what you really get

> Nano Banana free means generating in the Gemini app without a Google AI subscription: Nano Banana 2 by default, with files downloaded in 1K. Google doesn't publish how many images per day you get. Gemini isn't available in every country; you can compare the family's versions in AI2Face on welcome credits.

Nano Banana free isn't a separate app and it isn't unlimited. In the Gemini app without a Google AI subscription you get [Nano Banana 2](/models/nano-banana-2) and [Nano Banana 2 Lite](/models/nano-banana-2-lite). [Nano Banana Pro](/models/nano-banana-pro) doesn't run for free: it's for subscribers only. Gemini isn't available in every country. You can compare all four versions of the family in AI2Face.

## Nano Banana free: what you get without a subscription

The Gemini help describes image generation like this. Go to gemini.google.com with your account, open Images in the side panel and write a request or pick a template. Which model runs depends on the Gemini model switcher:

| | Without a Google AI subscription | With a Google AI subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2 | yes, if Flash or Pro is selected | yes |
| Nano Banana 2 Lite | yes, if Flash-Lite is selected | yes |
| [Nano Banana Pro](/models/nano-banana-pro) | no | yes, via Redo with Pro |
| “Full size” download | 1K | 2K |
| Editing an uploaded photo | yes, 18+ | yes, 18+ |

![Flea market stall with old keys and the same crop of the frame at 1K and 2K resolution](https://ai2face.com/_astro/resolution-1k-2k.Bg77C4Ix_28VtoT.jpg "What a 2K download gives you: at the top the full Nano Banana 2 frame, at the bottom the highlighted crop at the same magnification — on the left in 1K, as without a subscription, on the right in 2K.")

To get Pro, first create an image in Nano Banana 2 or 2 Lite, then tap More → Redo with Pro. If your daily Nano Banana 2 quota is used up, Redo with Pro isn't available either. The help doesn't state the size of that quota.

Google has no separate “Nano Banana” website. Domains with that name belong to third-party services. Where the models officially live and how the versions differ is covered on the [Nano Banana](/models/nano-banana) page.

## How many free generations per day

The help has no exact “N images a day” figure, and articles that say 20 or 3 aren't based on it. Since May 17, 2026, Gemini limits are counted by load: prompt complexity, the chosen model and chat length. The allowance refreshes every 5 hours until you hit the weekly cap.

| Plan | Limit relative to free |
|---|---|
| No subscription | standard |
| Google AI Plus | 2× higher |
| Google AI Pro | 4× higher |
| Google AI Ultra | 5× or 20× the AI Pro limit, depending on the plan |

Image generation uses up the allowance faster than a text reply. When it runs out, Gemini tells you when it will refresh. To see your usage: gemini.google.com → Settings → Usage limits. Google warns that limits may change without notice, and at peak times free access is cut earlier than paid.

A subscriber who hits the limit can continue the chat on Flash-Lite. That's exactly the mode in which images are made by Nano Banana 2 Lite, not Pro.

## How to use Nano Banana if Gemini isn't available

Gemini isn't available in every country. As of September 30, 2026, Google publishes a country list for the Gemini app and a region list for the API. Google checks the account country and the API region on its side.

In AI2Face the family's models are available in the generator, and the cost is shown before you generate.

1. Sign up. New accounts get welcome credits — enough to compare the versions on one prompt.
2. Open the generator and choose a model: Nano Banana, Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana 2 Lite or [Nano Banana Pro](/models/nano-banana-pro).
3. Write a prompt, upload references if needed, set the aspect ratio and resolution.
4. Start the generation. The cost in credits is shown before you start.

How to build a prompt so you don't have to redo the image from scratch is covered in the article [Nano Banana prompts](/blog/nano-banana-pro-prompts).

## In other languages and without sign-up

You can write the prompt in your own language, not only in English. If you need lettering in the image, put it in quotes and write it in the language it should be read in. The Gemini help specifically says text in images is rendered in supported languages, and even so short lettering is more reliable than paragraphs.

![“Autumn Fair” poster in Russian with a basket of apples, honey and a pie](https://ai2face.com/_astro/russian-poster.CZz_OLI9_1Xv3NS.jpg "An example with a non-Latin script: the whole prompt and the quoted lettering are in Russian. Nano Banana 2 in 1K, as in free Gemini — all three lines are correct.")

There's no free generation without sign-up. The help explicitly requires signing in to Gemini. AI2Face also needs an account: welcome credits are granted after sign-up, not to anonymous visitors.

Searching for “nano banana online” leads to the same place. There's nothing to download: both Gemini and AI2Face work in the browser.

## What it costs when the free limit isn't enough

In the Gemini app, paid plans don't sell images individually. They raise the overall limit by 2×, 4× and 5× or 20×, and unlock Redo with Pro plus 2K downloads. How much that is in dollars isn't stated on the limits page.

Through the Gemini API, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro have no free tier: the pricing page says “Not available” in the Free Tier column. Standard-tier prices, not batch:

| Model | 0.5K | 1K | 2K | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2 | $0.045 | $0.067 | $0.101 | $0.151 |
| Nano Banana Pro | — | $0.134 | $0.134 | $0.24 |

According to the API documentation, all generated images carry a SynthID watermark. The apps help doesn't describe a visible “sparkle” on the image, so a clean preview can't be promised without checking.

In AI2Face the price in credits depends on the model and resolution and is shown before you start. We don't quote a specific number of credits here: it changes in the model catalog.

## Conclusions

Free Nano Banana is enough if Gemini is available to you and you need a few Nano Banana 2 images in 1K. For Pro, 2K downloads and working without watching the 5-hour limit, you need a Google AI subscription — and in countries where Gemini isn't available, that route is closed. A practical option is AI2Face: the welcome credits go toward comparing versions, and after that you pay only for the generations you run.

Images from Google's API are marked with SynthID. Before publishing, check the text in the image and the face: the free limit is also spent on failed takes.
