# AI profile picture generator: 6 styles from one selfie, and which model keeps your face

> An AI profile picture generator turns one selfie into an avatar in a minute: it keeps your face and redraws the rest. We made six avatars from one snapshot — a business headshot, anime, 3D, watercolor, neon and an autumn portrait — and compared Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream 5.0 Pro on one prompt. Below: prompts, the winner on likeness and a circle-crop check.

Your profile picture gets seen more than any other photo of you: in every message, comment and contact list. AI makes one from an ordinary selfie — no photographer, no drawing skills. We took one photo shot at home, turned it into six avatars in different styles, sent the same prompt to three models and checked how the avatar looks in a small circle.

## 1. How to make an AI profile picture from a photo: 3 steps

1. **Upload a photo.** A portrait with your whole face visible, no sunglasses or shadows over the eyes. Background and clothing don't matter — the model will replace them.
2. **Describe the style and what to keep.** The style is “business headshot”, “anime”, “3D character”. The must-have line is “keep the face exactly the same: face shape, eyes, haircut, moles”. Without it, the model draws someone similar but different.
3. **Set a circle-friendly format.** A 1:1 square, head and shoulders centered, with room around the head. Almost every platform shows avatars as a circle and crops the corners.

The model developers say the same. Google's documentation for [Nano Banana](/models/nano-banana) recommends describing the scene in detail and using a photo as a character reference. OpenAI's GPT Image prompting guide advises listing explicitly what must stay unchanged.

## 2. Test: one selfie, six avatar styles

The source is an ordinary selfie at home in a gray hoodie. We deliberately kept a distinguishing mark — a mole on the cheek: it shows right away whether a model holds the facial features. All six avatars were made in [Nano Banana Pro](/models/nano-banana-pro) with the same prompt ending:

```
Keep his face exactly the same: face shape, eyes, short dark wavy hair,
light stubble, the small mole on his left cheek. Head and shoulders
centered in a square frame so it fits a circle crop, no text, no logos
```

Before it goes the style description:

| Style | Start of the prompt | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Business headshot | “professional headshot: navy blazer, white shirt, soft studio light, plain warm gray background, photorealistic” | LinkedIn, work messengers, résumés |
| Anime | “anime avatar, clean modern illustration, cel shading, pastel sky-blue background” | Discord, games, personal chats |
| 3D character | “3D character in an animated movie style, soft clay-like materials, big expressive eyes, orange background” | social media, family and kids' chats |
| Watercolor | “watercolor portrait on textured paper, soft washes of blue and ochre” | creative profiles, blogs |
| Neon | “cyberpunk portrait at night in a rainy city, magenta and cyan neon rim light” | gaming and music profiles |
| Autumn portrait | “portrait in a park with golden leaves, camel coat, warm golden-hour light” | a seasonal avatar change |

The mole, haircut and face shape match in every frame. The person in the source photo was generated for this test")

The result: the face is instantly recognizable in all six frames, and the mole stays put. The model fit four of the avatars into a circle with white corners on its own — that's how it read “so it fits a circle crop”. For uploading, a full square is better: write “background to the edges of the frame, no round border”. ## 3. Best AI for avatars: one prompt, three models

We sent the anime avatar prompt with the same selfie to [GPT Image 2.5](/models/gpt-image) and [Seedream 5.0 Pro](/models/seedream) as well.

![On the left the original selfie, then anime avatars of the same man from Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream 5.0 Pro](https://ai2face.com/_astro/compare.DptqzEal_Z2sUfOj.jpg "Left to right: source, Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5, Seedream 5.0 Pro. One prompt, one reference")

| | Nano Banana Pro | GPT Image 2.5 | Seedream 5.0 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime style | true anime, lines and flat fills | a semi-realistic digital portrait, not anime | anime, softer and more detailed |
| Likeness | high | high | high |
| Mole | in place | moved to the other cheek | in place |
| Border | fit into a circle | square, no border | fit into a circle |

Our takeaway: for avatars in a given style, Nano Banana Pro worked best — it combined style and facial features most precisely. Seedream is a good alternative if you want a softer drawing. GPT Image 2.5 leans harder toward photorealism: a plus for a business avatar, a minus for anime, where you'll need to push the style in the prompt.

## 4. How to prepare a photo for an avatar

- **The whole face, in focus.** Facing the camera or with a slight head turn, eyes open, no sunglasses, mask or hair over the face.
- **Even light.** Daylight from a window beats flash and backlight: the model mistakes hard shadows for facial features.
- **A relaxed expression.** A slight smile carries over into any style; a wide laugh or squint, less so.
- **Several photos for likeness.** If one photo gives you “similar, but not quite”, upload 2–4 shots from different angles. AI2Face has a character builder for this: you create a character once from 1–4 photos and drop it into any style without re-uploading.
- **Only your own photo, or with consent.** An avatar made from someone else's picture without their permission violates their rights.

## 5. Profile picture size and the circle crop

Platforms list sizes differently, but one rule applies everywhere: upload a 1:1 square at 1–2K resolution and let the platform shrink it and crop it into a circle. As an example, VK, the Russian social network, states in its official guide for communities that the avatar thumbnail is 200×200 pixels; when uploading, you choose which part goes into the thumbnail.

The real test isn't on a big screen but in a chat list, where the avatar takes up 40–50 pixels.

![Business and neon avatars of the same man in a circle at 320, 96 and 40 pixels](https://ai2face.com/_astro/circle.-eDF8imn_Z17UiWq.jpg "Top: business headshot; bottom: neon — in a circle at 320, 96 and 40 px. At 40 px the face on a plain background reads clearly; on the busy neon background it gets lost")

What shows up at small sizes:

1. **A plain background wins.** The business headshot on gray is recognizable even at 40 px, while the neon city turns into a colorful blur.
2. **A bigger face.** The head should fill 50–60% of the frame: shoulders matter less in an avatar than you'd think.
3. **Contrast between face and background.** Dark hair on a dark background blends in — choose a light or colored background.

## 6. An avatar without your own photo

If you'd rather not show your face — for an anonymous blog, a gaming handle or a brand — you can make an avatar from a description alone. Simple characters work well: animals, mascots, abstract shapes in a flat style.

```
Minimalist flat vector avatar of a fictional red fox wearing round
glasses and a teal scarf, friendly expression, simple geometric shapes,
bold clean outlines, solid mustard yellow background, head centered
in a square frame, no text, no logos
```

For a company logo avatar with a name on it, use models that render text accurately — more in our guide to [creating a logo with AI](/blog/logotip-nejroset).

## 7. Free AI profile picture generator: what's realistic

Quality models don't run fully free: generation costs money on the developer's side. “Free, no sign-up” services usually add a watermark or limit resolution and the number of generations. AI2Face gives you starter credits when you sign up — enough for several avatars in different styles. The cost of each generation is shown before you run it, and credits from packs don't expire.

## 8. Limitations and risks

- **Likeness isn't guaranteed on the first try.** From a single photo, the model may “fix” your nose or jawline. 2–4 photos and a line about distinguishing marks help.
- **Small details get mixed up.** The model may move moles, scars or asymmetry to the other side — GPT Image 2.5 did exactly that in our test.
- **“Plastic” skin.** In realistic styles, ask for “natural skin texture”, or the face will look retouched.
- **Text on the avatar.** Small lettering is unreadable in a circle anyway — if you need text, keep it to one or two words.
- **Other people's faces and celebrities.** Don't make avatars from other people's photos without their consent, and don't impersonate anyone.

## Bottom line

In 2026 an AI profile picture made from a photo is recognizable on the first try, as long as the prompt says “keep the face exactly the same” and lists your distinguishing features. In our test Nano Banana Pro combined style and likeness best: six styles, with the mole and haircut in place in each. Seedream 5.0 Pro is a good second choice for illustrated styles, GPT Image 2.5 for realistic business headshots. Before setting an avatar, view it in a circle at 40 pixels: a plain background and a large face work better than a striking but busy shot. In AI2Face all three models are in one generator, the cost is shown before each run, and the starter credits cover your first avatars.

## FAQ

### How do I make an AI avatar from my own photo?

Upload a portrait where your face is clearly visible, describe the style and add the line “keep the face exactly the same”. Use a 1:1 square with the head centered. Check the finished avatar in a small circle.

### Which AI is best for avatars from a photo?

In our test Nano Banana Pro held likeness and style best: the mole, haircut and face shape matched in all six styles. Seedream 5.0 Pro also kept the features, while GPT Image 2.5 drifted from anime to a semi-realistic portrait and moved the mole to the other cheek.

### Can I make an AI profile picture for free?

Partly. AI2Face gives you starter credits when you sign up — enough for several avatars in different styles. The cost of each generation is shown before you run it.

### What size should a profile picture be?

Make a 1:1 square at 1–2K resolution: platforms shrink it and crop it into a circle themselves. For example, VK, the Russian social network, displays community avatar thumbnails at 200×200 pixels.

### Is it safe to upload my photo to an AI?

Upload photos only to services you trust, and don't use pictures that show documents or other people's faces. Making an avatar from someone else's photo without their consent isn't okay.
